Goat Disbudding Services

Safe, experienced disbudding for goat kids in Woodville, Texas and the surrounding East Texas area.

Why we disbud within the first 1–2 weeks

For the health and comfort of your kids, we strongly prefer to disbud within the first 1–2 weeks of life — and no later. This is the window where the procedure is fastest, cleanest, and least stressful on the kid. At this age the horn buds are still small and easier to work with, which makes for a quicker, cleaner result.

Disbudding early means:

  • The horn buds are still small and not yet attached to the skull, so the cauterization is quick and complete.
  • Significantly lower risk of scurs — the partial, misshapen horn regrowth that happens when buds are disbudded too late.
  • Faster healing and a much shorter recovery for the kid.
  • Less stress and discomfort for both the kid and the doe.

Once kids pass that two-week window, the buds attach to the skull and the procedure becomes harder on everyone involved. If your kids are already older than two weeks, please contact us to discuss options — but the earlier you reach out, the better the outcome.

What to expect

The procedure

We use a properly heated disbudding iron and the technique is quick — typically just seconds per bud. Kids are handled gently and calmly throughout.

What to bring

Bring your kids in a clean carrier or crate. We'll go over age, bud size, and any health concerns before we start.

Aftercare

Kids bounce back fast. We'll send you home with simple aftercare guidance — keep the spots clean and dry, and watch for normal scab formation over the next couple of weeks.

Serving goat owners in East Texas

We're based in Woodville, Texas and offer disbudding for goat owners throughout the East Texas region. Whether you're raising Nubians, Nigerian Dwarves, LaManchas, Alpines, Saanens, or a mixed homestead herd, we're happy to help.

Because the 1–2 week window is short, we recommend reaching out as soon as your kids are on the ground — or even before — so we can schedule a time that works for both of us.

Hands-on, herd-tested experience

We disbud our own kids every kidding season here at Kessel Run Dairy Goats. It's a routine part of how we raise our herd, and we approach your kids the same way we approach our own — calmly, carefully, and with the kid's welfare front and center.
